The book content item allows a user to create content that is in a paged format. This allows the system to structure the items in a paged view.

Without this, web documents seem to go on forever, down down down. The concept of pages allows a user to navigate from section to section in a logical process.

This is one example of how content is managed inside of Drupal. All content is referred to as Nodes.
